Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway 2017
Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway 2017
This years Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway has a lineup that includes some of the funniest acts on the planet. There are 75 shows and over 100 acts vying for your laughs from 24th-30th October. How about international comedy superstars Jon Richardson or Reginald D Hunter? Or perhaps its home-grown legends of the stand-up stage Tommy Tiernan or PJ Gallagher who will float your boat. Whatever tickles your funny-bone, you are sure to have a blast in Galway this October. Here’s our pick….
Sketching and Skitting with Phil Jupitus
From Tuesday to Friday, Phil Jupitus will hold court at the Kenny Art Gallery. ‘Never Mind the Buzzcocks’ anyone? Armed with just a trusty iPad, Phil will be sketching and skitting from 10am each morning. Pop along and join in at this freeb early event- the perfect way to start your day.
Comedy Greats
Some of the shows for the festival including Dara O’Briain and Jon Richardson are already sold out. But fear not! There are still a few tickets available to see Al Porter, Colin Murphy, and others do their thing in the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent on Thursday night. Or why not catch festival favorite Ardal O’Hanlon in the Taibhdhearc Theatre?.
Evangelical Christianity and Wobbly Manifestos
Our first pick for Saturday night is the brilliantly funny Katy Brand at the Taibhdhearc Theatre. Evangelical Christianity and hysterical laughter wouldn’t be natural bedfellows. But Katy’s “I Was a Teenage Christian” show got rave reviews at the Edinburgh Festival. No doubt in will be similarly received here.
Stay in the Taibhdhearc for Francesca Martinez and her Wobbly Manifesto. Wobbly is a reference to her Cerebral Palsy, but this is only a small part of her story. How would embracing diversity as normal revolutionise the world we live in? Seriously funny and a fresh talent, this is one show that will stay with you long after the weekend is over.
Family Friendly Fun
InspireMe favorites The Lords of Strut take over the Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent on Sunday 29th. These self proclaimed Absolute Legends have a family friendly show allowing you bring the kids along and remind yourself what an amazing parent you are. Then it’s back to grown-up time…
Facebook Phenomenons and Stand-Up Legends
The always hilarious Deirdre O’Kane will be in excellent company in the Róisín Dubh on Sunday night, with Katherine Lynch, Gearoid Farrelly, Eleanor Tiernan and Chris Kent all taking to the mic. Or how about Facebook phenomenons Shardon, Chanto and Rory? The Taidhbhearc plays host to Rory’s Stories & Giz A Laugh. These social media sensations will be off the screen and on the stage for one night only.
There are so many great shows on offer over the weekend. Visit www.vodafonecomedycarnival.com for lots more. But our final special mention goes to the one and only Karl Spain’s Open Top Bus Tour of Ireland. Karl will give a unique running commentary on everything from Nun’s Island to the Dyke Road and beyond on a this one hour tour of the city aboard a Lally Tours open top double decker. Can this Limerick native provide new insights on the City of the Tribes? It’s doubtful. But you can be guaranteed there’ll be plenty of laughs along the way.
P.S. Seeing as you’re in Galway already, don’t forget the Macnas Halloween Parade which takes place on Sunday at 5.30pm. What could be more Galway that a marauding gang of paper mache heads processing through the streets?
