The longest day of the year is beckoning on Wednesday June 21st. And with it the chance to celebrate the summer solstice. This was traditionally a pagan festival in Ireland which was celebrated by the lighting of bonfires. There are events around the country to celebrate the Midsummer in style. Here are a few of our favourites to inspire you over the week.
Festivals
The first of the major festivals is Body & Soul Festival 2017 in Clonmellon, Co Westmeath. This is a camping festival which features theatrical performances, music and lots more in the stunning woodland grounds of Ballinlough Castle, Co. Westmeath. Body & Soul is the ultimate glamping festival. You can bring your tents, your children and be prepared to be entranced .
Cork Midsummer Festival is an annual arts festival at a variety of venues across the city for audiences of all ages. There will be something for everyone on the banks of the River Lee.
Meanwhile in Kildare, the towns of Naas and Sallins have combined forces to present Midsummer Arts Festival 2017. The programme here includes busking, street art, family events, music and performance. So there is something for everyone to enjoy!
Solstice Sunrise Walk
For the chance to walk in ancient footsteps, take yourself and your walking shoes to the Cavan Burren Park on Sunday 18th for the Solstice Sunrise Walk. Learn about geology and mythology in this awe-inspiring prehistoric landscape.
Summer Solstice Family Fun Day
Nowhere is more intimately linked with our pagan past than the World Heritage Site at Bru na Boinne, Co Meath. Solstice at the Henge on Saturday June 17th is a fantastic family day out. Here, everyone can learn about our historical past. In addition, there will be music and artisan foods to while away the hours. In addition, just down the road in Navan Solstice Family Fun Day in the Solstice Arts Centre will have free events for the children including face painting and a viewing of Sing the Movie on June 24th.
Wellness
And to ensure that you are in tip-top condition to enjoy all that Ireland has to offer this midsummer, head to Rejuvenate Ireland in Ferrycarrig on Wednesday 21st. This day-long event starts with yoga workshop in the morning. Furthermore, in the evening, talks from many experts and sports personalities will help us to manage stress in our busy lives.
