The Summer Solstice, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, is worth celebrating. A special day in the Celtic calendar, it’s in our DNA to mark the longest day of the year. Here are some fantastic Summer Solstice Events that make the most of all those hours of daylight.
 

The Amergin Solstice Poetry Gathering: Éigse Na Gréine

A celebration of contemporary poetry takes place in Waterville, Co. Kerry from 20 to 23 June. It is here where the Milesians, having travelled from Galicia, made landfall, and where Amergin, their poet, judge and leader chanted the renowned Song of Amergin as he stepped ashore. Intrigued? Lough Gur Summer Solstice Festival

Stations of the Sun

On the evening of Friday June 21 and through the whole next day, as the sun shines longest on our northern hemisphere, new music will burst forth in Dundalk. The midsummer sun brings some of the most exciting composers and outstanding musicians from around the globe to the town for Louth Contemporary Music Society’s annual festival of new music. This year, in the image of a ritual journey, Stations of the Sun will follow the solar cycle in a sequence of five concerts. Get the details of this unmissable event here
 

 

Summer Solstice Tour – NMI : Archeology

To celebrate the Summer Solstice, join the National Museum of Ireland’s special tour to discover how some archaeological monuments in Ireland, such as the Hill of Tara and ancient tombs are linked to celestial events. Ras Oiche Eoin (Summer Solstice)

Oíche Fhéile Eoin is has its origins in pagan times and was traditionally celebrated in Ireland on the eve of June 23rd by the lighting of bonfires.  In Glencolmcille you can partake in Ras Oíche Eoin, a run that will take you to one of Ireland’s most scenic and Isolated areas.
