Street Feast 2017 – Let's get the party started!
Street Feast 2017
Would you like an excuse for a party? Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland on Sunday 11th June. We all know that Irish society has changed beyond recognition over the last few years. Our parent’s and grandparent’s lives would have been closely intertwined with those of their neighbours, whether in the city or the countryside. Now, most of us are lucky if we get a wave over the hedge as we head off in the morning to go about our day.
What’s it all about?
Street Feast is Ireland’s annual day of street parties & community lunches. This is its 8th year; last year over 120,000 people took part in 1,215 Street Feasts all over the country. The aim of the volunteers who run Street Feast is to tackle and reduce isolation and boost community resilience. And I also suspect they may like a party…
Why not host your own Street Feast
Anyone can host a Street Feast. First of all, registration couldn’t be simpler. You just visit StreetFeast.ie to sign up and receive all the information you need to get you started. In addition you’ll even get a free party pack. And no, you won’t have to do lots of cooking. Everyone attending the lunch is encouraged to bring a dish. Pot-luck lunches are the order of the day.
They can be held anywhere — on tables set out on a quiet street (don’t block the traffic though), in a local park or in your front garden. Do you want to deck the local community hall out in bunting left over from the celebrations for the time the under 12’s won the county final? Maybe throw some blankets on the lawn in the village green and call in a picnic? It’s your community, celebrate it your way.
We have plenty of guidelines on making your street feast accessible to those with special needs. And to make sure no one ends up with a tricky tummy have a look at our tips on Food Safety.
We all know that what makes our country great is our community spirit. We will be there for our neighbours in times of trouble. But this is a great opportunity to get together for a joyful event.
Have a laugh, swap stories, eat food and party on!
