Music For Galway presents Midwinter Festival Prodigy 20-22nd January 2017
MUSIC FOR GALWAY delves into the fascinating world of musical prodigy for its annual Midwinter Festival at the Town Hall Theatre, Galway, over the weekend of 20-22 January 2017.
Midwinter Festival Prodigy is an entire weekend of chamber and vocal works composed by child and teenage composers, from Mozart and Mendelssohn to Glazunov and Prokofiev. Artistic Director Finghin Collins mines this legacy of youthful genius to communicate the brilliance and virtuosity of prodigies featured in the festival.
Making her Irish début at the festival is child prodigy, eleven-year-old Alma Deutscher, whose mother is Irish, and who is acclaimed as one of today’s most exciting young composers. Alma performs many of her works on multiple instruments.
All works in the Midwinter Festival Prodigy have been written before or by the age of eighteen, and encompass an amazing range of music across Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century periods. Artists performing in the festival include Irish soprano, Anna Devin, Swiss pianist Christian Chamorel and the Irish-based string quartets, ConTempo and Esposito.
Do or Die: The Story of Lang Lang, the documentary feature from BBC 1’s Imagine… series, will be screened over the festival weekend. It documents the life of this Chinese classical music star and explores the challenges and rewards of managing extraordinary talent.
