International Women’s Day Events
International Women’s Day takes place on March 8th. We want to celebrate the wonderful women who stand up for injustice. Those who fly the flag for equality. We want to remember acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. And also we just love great events!

The Eve of International Women’s Day – Wednesday 7th March
The Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute is hosting a Symposium to mark International Women’s Day, on Wednesday, March 7th. With discussions on the role of women in politics from 1918 to 2018, this should be an insightful day. This event is free to attend. However advance registration is required. Find out more here.
Of Course, this year celebrates the centenary of women’s suffrage 1918-2018. As part of the celebrations Dr. Mary Strangman, Waterford’s first woman Councillor, doctor, suffragette and public health activist will be honoured with a Waterford Civic Trust blue plaque. The Sugar Club in Dublin will be host to an evening of tunes and chats. To celebrate the centenary year of women’s suffrage in Ireland, BAN BAN have convened to challenge, inspire and engage around the question of female empowerment and equality. Speakers will include Kate O’Connell TD and Senator Ivana Bacik. Farah Elle and Joni will be among those supplying the soundtrack for what is sure to be a fascinating evening. International Women’s Day – Thursday 8th March
Let’s begin in the South East. The Waterford the Central Library will have an exhibition honouring 100 years of women’s rights to vote. Find out more here.
Finding a Voice is a series of classical music concerts by women composers that will be hosted by South Tipperary Arts Centre as part of their programme of events to celebrate International Women’s Day 2018. The concerts will take place in various venues throughout the town of Clonmel. Find out more here.
An Táin Arts Centre in Dundalk has a fantastic event planned to mark International Women’s Day. Lives in Translation is a brilliant new production from the award winning Kabosh Theatre group. It is the story of one woman, who in fleeing the conflict of her home, becomes trapped in a different form of struggle – the suffocating bureaucracy of immigration. Following the performance the company will lead a post-show discussion on gender parity to mark International Women’s Day. Find out more here.
Meanwhile, at Friars Gate Theatre in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick you can join the Richard Harris International Film Festival Team. They will spend the evening celebrating women in film with a selection of the many films by women screened at last years festival. Find out more here.
Dublin Events
To mark International Women’s Day, archaeologist Maeve Sikora,who is Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland will talk about a special female Viking burial in Finglas, Dublin. This is a free lunchtime lecture. Surely this is the perfect escape from the office for the day that’s in it. Find out more here.
Staying in Dublin, Glasnevin Cemetery in the resting place of some of the amazing women who helped shape our country. The Glasnevin Museum has arranged a very special tour of the cemetery. Among the graves visited will be Countess Markievicz, Maud Gonne, Helena Moloney, Charlotte Despard, Hannah Sheehy-Skeffington, Delia Larkin, Madeleine Ffrench Mullen and many others. Last but not least,, a brilliant gig will have you partying into the night at the Grand Social in Dublin. Rock Hard Women is part of the Five Lamps Arts Festival. A female led event, the night will showcase some of the most interesting groups of the music and dance scene. Find out more here.
A time to reflect..
We wish there was no need to mark International Women’s Day. That our sisters around the globe had the same access to educational and career opportunities as their male counterparts. That female genital mutilation was not the hot topic of the day. And that a #MeToo social media campaign was not needed to highlight the abuse women in all sectors have been subjected too…
When is International Men’s Day? This year it falls on Monday, 19 November. So plenty of time to organise some events!
