Engineer's Week Ireland
Engineer’s Week takes place all over Ireland from February 24th – March 2nd . Organised by STEPS, Engineers Ireland, the many events planned will challenge and entertain young and old. And perhaps inspire some to pursue a career in engineering. We have picked just a few of our favourite events taking place all over the country here. Battling it out in Ballina
In Ballina Library on Saturday 24th there will be a 3 hour sumo workshop under the experienced eye of Colmac Robotics. Most suited to children age 8-13, your budding engineers will design and build their own robots in teams. Best of all they will then cheer on their creations as they battle for survival in a robot wars arena. This is a free event. But advanced booking is essential.
Family Fun in Galway
There’s something for everyone at NUIG’s Engineering Our Future – Family Fun Day. There will be lots of science and engineering shows, movie screenings, workshops and hands-on activities. This is a day that will inspire young (and older!!) people and help them learn about the world around us. Furthermore, this event is free to attend. What a great way to spend a Saturday. Loving engineering in Lismore
Lismore Heritage centre will be hosting a dedicated Engineering Workshop to celebrate Engineer’s Week. This fun, hands-on workshop is best for children age 6-12. It will allow them to explore engineering through design and creation. This is a fantastic way to start the weekend. Again you must book in advance.
Awestruck in Athlone
Any budding GI Joes or GI Janes will love the Military Capabilities event in Custume Barracks, Athlone. Throughout Engineer’s Week some dedicated personnel will be talking about the role of Army Engineers. There will be a chance to get up close to the different equipment used both at home and on overseas missions. This is usually not open to the public so be sure to register for one of these free sessions.
Physics can be fun
One of the most intriguing of events taking place around the country is ‘Its All Done With Mirrors’. Anyone lucky enough to attend in Waterford, Carlow, or Limerick will get to see Dr Ken Farquhar combine magic and illusion with science and engineering. The audience will discover just how magical science can be while completely enthralled.
Brilliant in Birr
Who wants to be a Superhero? Everyone who attends Birr Arts Centre or Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise will definitely be aiming high after this fantastic show. The audience will explore the superpowers of scientists and engineers as they answer some great questions. How do planes fly? How are engineers saving the planet? Horizons will be expanded as the importance of science to the way we live today is explored.
Dream Big
Dream Big: Engineering Our World is narrated by Jeff Bridges. This film celebrates the human achievements behind the world’s biggest feats of engineering from the Great Wall of China to sustainable cities. This new release will be shown all around the country. And some places will have engineers on hand after the screening to answer any questions. Furthermore it is suitable for all ages. Screenings will take place in Ardagh Heritage and Creativity Centre, and in many libraries all over the country such as Roscommon Library, Elphin, Ennistimon, Ballaghaderreen, Strokestown, and Scarriff.
Wonder in Waterford
This fascinating talk entitled The Secret Maths of your Smartphone, in Waterford Institute of Technology will trace the evolution of modern smartphones and computers from mathematics of the 1600’s. There will be interactive challenges for the audience, and plenty of discussion on the future path for these technologies. Certainly this is an event not to be missed.
