Engineers Week 2017
This Saturday March 4th sees the start of Engineers Week 2017. Intended as a week to inspire young enquiring minds, it is also a fantastic opportunity for adults to learn a little about this fascinating career that underpins so much of the world around us, from the roads and bridges we traverse, to the buildings we inhabit and the machines that have changed our lives.
The week is coordinated by the fantastic team in Engineers Ireland. They have an amazing program of events over the week. Engineers all over the country are volunteering their time to go to schools and talk to pupils about their careers and opportunities available to people who chose to follow their path.
Here is a snapshot of just some of the hundreds of fantastic events all around the country that are open to the public but please do also check out the full program on the Engineers Week website. . Be inspired by these amazing people giving their time and expertise to a great initiative.
Building with Lego Mindstorms
11-1, Sat 4th The Spot Youth Café, Main St., Birr, Co. Offaly
Bridge Building Competition.
This is a family-friendly team competition from 14.30 – 17.00, Sat 4th at the Tog Hackerspace, Dublin 8 Engineering theory and building materials will be provided to help you during construction. A secret prize will be up for grabs for the winners. The competition will have a half an hour of short talks, an hour and a half of building followed by half an hour of testing.
LSC Recreate Workshop – Release your Child’s Potential
14.00-15.30 and 16.00-17.30, Pier Road, Kinsale, Co Cork LSC – a fun and creative workshop which will allow children to explore their creative side and develop an understanding for the potential of STEM as a course option at second level, while also promoting engineering as a career choice.
Printfest
14.00 – 16.00 Sun 5th at the National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, gives you the opportunity to see the ‘engineering’ behind the traditional craft of letterpress printing.
The Engineering Student Debate
20.00 – 21.00, Monday 6th IT Sligo The engineering student debate will take place in A0004 in IT Sligo. This will see two teams of four propose and oppose a motion based on the theme of engineer’s week.
Engineers Tree week open night
16.00 – 18.00 Monday 6th Blackrock Observatory, Cork, a guided tree walk from Blackrock Castle Observatory along the tree lined, riverside amenity to the Douglas Estuary and back. Following the walk a Moon observing session will run from 17.00-18.00. This event is weather permitting and will focus on the first quarter Moon in the early evening sky.
Anyone 4 Science Workshop
Tuesday 7th 16.00 – 17.00, Laurel Lodge, Wicklow, how to build a waterproof paper boat.
Dr Megaphones Irish Jaunt
Friday 10th 18.00-19.00 Dr Megaphones Irish Jaunt, Engineers Ireland, Clyde Road Dublin 4 – a journey in words, pictures, music and live experiments through Ireland’s history in Science, Technology And Engineering. Learn about hurricanes, diving bells and a cat that may, or may not, be alive. The show will also be broadcast as a live webcast on the Engineer’s Ireland website so people around the country can log on and watch.
The Science of Bubbles
16.00 – 17.00, Tues 7th The Durcan Centre, Fortunestown Way, Jobstown, Dublin. Join Scientific Sue on her latest journey of scientific discovery – bubbles! Big, small, bouncing, touchable, floating, sinking. Bubbles hold many wonders and create lots of excitement! Have you ever wondered why bubbles float? Why we can see rainbows in bubbles?
