Culture Night in the West – Mayo, Sligo, Galway, Roscommon, Leitrim

 
There has always been a strong cultural heritage in the west of Ireland. And this year Culture Night is being taken to new heights across Connaught. Here is just a sample of a few of our favourites below to give you a small flavour of what’s on. 
 
 

Sligo

Performance By Sligo Youth Voices

The Hamilton Gallery in Sligo will be challenging young artists aged 12 and over, to create their masterpieces with the Ready, Steady, Draw competition. There are fantastic prizes in the different age categories so be sure to bring their creative best. Sessions start every 30 mins between 2 and 5pm so there will be plenty of chances to take part. In the Hawkswell Theatre there will also be a performance from Sligo Youth Voices. Join them to celebrate the a night of musical magic in the West. While at The Model there is a jam-packed programme including an exhibition of the Yeats family photographs by John Butler Yeats.
 
 

Roscommon

King House, Boyle

The magnificent and historical King House in Boyle, Co Roscommon will be offering free tours all day long. Come see the interactive exhibitions and the Mary McAleese collection. Booking is essential. Meanwhile in Roscommon Town, there will be a multicultural evening in the Roscommon Further Education Centre. Celebrate the food, culture and music from Brazil, Poland, Latvia and Ireland from 4-6pm. Also in Roscommon, The Suck Valley Centre in Athleague presents Athleague Quirks. This exhibition features five artists and five different disciplines including painting, textiles and ceramics.
 

Leitrim

The Rainbow Ballroom Of Romance – Tea Dance

Leitrim Design House in Carrick-on-Shannon will have a crash course in abstract painting.Suitable for would-be artists of all ages, under the careful eye of Kate Murtagh Sheridan, you can create your first masterpiece here. Or why not step back in time in Glenfarne with the Rainbow Ballroom of Romance Tea Dance. Robert Brown will have you twirling around the dancefloor in this iconic building, which was once the central focus of many Irish towns.

Culture Night: At Ballycroy National Park

There is a really special night for those in Mayo. Ballycroy National Park presents ‘Exploring our culture’, a celebration of music and a talk by composer Adrian Vernon Fish. The exhibition will be open from 5-8 pm. In Westport House visitors are invited between 6-9pm with a free guided tour of this historical house and gardens at 7pm. Or if you have always wanted to try yoga, then head to Castlebar for Noga-Yoga.

Mexican Folk Dancing

Galway is no stranger to the arts, and they will be celebrating culture night in the heart of the city. First up is the Famous People, Theatre and Literature Tour will talk you on a cultural tour of the city. Find out the hidden secrets in the doorways and streets of Galway.  Meanwhile in Salthill the Galway Cultural Institute will be celebrating Mexican Independence Day with a fiesta of Mexican Folk Dancing. In Westside Library the Write-On Writer’s Group will be sharing their own stories and poems, and encourage audience members who want to share their own literary creations. And in the Claddagh Cottage you are invited to a Night of Storytelling and Improvisation with the crew of Moth & Butterfly.
