Culture Night in the Midlands – Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Kildare
Since it began as a small event in Dublin in 2006, Culture Night has grown into one of the most inspirational events of the year. For one night only, on Friday 21st September, cultural organisations all over the country are throwing open their doors. We have picked some of our favourite events in the Midlands.
Westmeath
Westmeath is embracing Culture night 2018 in style. In Moate, Dun na Si Heritage Park is throwing open its doors. Learn about life in the ‘olden days’ – from farm houses to hedge schools. With nature trails and blacksmiths forges there is something around every corner. Bringing the past to life – see here for more information. In Mullingar Library, literary types who have a story to tell can learn their craft at a Memoir Writing Workshop from 3-4.30pm with Carmel Maginn. With coffee and buns for all participants, this promises to be a very sociable afternoon. Booking is essential. And in the Crane Bird Art Studio in Mullingar, adults and children can take part in a Painting on Fabric Workshop. Athlone Castle and Visitor Centre will have free admission from 5.30- 8pm. And if the rain holds off, the Athlone Pipe Band will be performing in the castle courtyard.
Offaly
In Tullamore Co Offaly VR Studio will introduce you to the magical world of virtual reality. 360° short films made in Ireland – these movies will change the way you think about animation and film for ever. Advance booking is required. And also in Offaly the Birr Theatre and Arts Centre plays host to the group exhibition of In-sites/ On Cheapach, The audience is invited to a discussion with the artists followed by a special screening of the film ‘Post Colony’,followed by Sonic Pollinators at 8.30, a unique depiction of pollinators through music and sound.
Laois
Anyone who has ever dreamt of running away with the circus should head to Portlaoise this culture night for the Circus Skills Workshop. With street performers demonstrating stilt walking, juggling, hula hoop, acrobatics and so much more, this is one the whole family can enjoy. Or in Stradbally Library why not take the little ones to a special Puppet Show and Storytime with Julie Rose McCormick. From Puss in Boots to Oisin in Tir na nOg, there will be magical adventures to enchant little people.
Meanwhile in Mountrath the historical heritage Roundwood House will be hosting ‘Hidden Spaces’, a Jen Donnery Pop Up Art Exhibition. These works will celebrate the hidden spaces at Roundwood House, and afterwards visitors can retire to the library for refreshments. And in Emo,on Culture Night one of Ireland’s most beautiful stately homes Emo Court will be throwing open its doors. Be sure to take in the magnificent lake and gardens on your visit.
Kildare
In Newbridge, Co Kildare the fantastically named Live Life, Love Dance will be introducing wannabe dancers of all ages to the magical world of dancing. From Ballroom to Salsa, Hip Hop to Latin – you will be ready for Strictly in no time.
Down the road in the National Stud there is a fabulous 2-hour workshop ‘The Art of Nature’. This collaboration between Ania’s Ceramics and Candella Ireland will encourage creative types – make your own collage or even a bar of soap. From 6-8pm this is sure to be a popular event so booking is essential. Or why not visit the historical Maynooth Castle by Night. Expert guides will share stories of the place this castle had in Irish history.
