Culture night in Mayo, Roscommon & Sligo
There has always been a strong cultural heritage in the west of Ireland. And this year Culture Night is being taken to new heights across Connaught. Here is just a sample of a few of our favourites below to give you a small flavour of what’s on. We have hundreds of events listed on www.inspireme.ie. Mayo
To Mayo first where the red and green flags are still flying high in spite of the crushing disappointment on the football field.
- The good people of Scoil Acla are taking to the road with a range of venues across the island. There will be a travelling bus bringing you on a pop-up trad tour of music and song.
- In Ballinrobe there is a celebration of food, music and culture from all around the world. Charlestown Arts Centre has a fabulous workshop of children’s arts, crafts and printmaking. Then this will be followed by an evening of music, song and dance by local musicians.
- In Claremorris you can take a historical tour of the town to learn about the physical and cultural environment in the company of local experts.
- Lecanvey Community Centre will be featuring music, poetry, drama and dance with a special Culture Night quiz.
- While in Swinford Cultural Centre, the artist Lucy Hill shall have a special art workshop where children of all ages will be encouraged to get creative.
- Finally the beautiful Westport House & Gardens shall have an open door on Culture night. With free guided tours and a music performance on the sweeping marble staircase by Choir Cor Mhaigh Eo, this will be a night to remember.
Sligo
- In Sligo the Hawks Well Theatre feature ‘The Shape of Things’, a story of two shapes Cubert and Triantan and their adventures. Puppetry, theatre and music will enchant your little ones from 6 months to 2 years.
- For a more high-brow experience, the Niland Gallery has a wonderful exhibition exploring the pen and ink drawings and oil paintings of Jack B Yeats, with an exhibition tour at 7pm.
- The Factory hosts a Sculpture Workshop with Bettina Seitz, with adults and children alike all welcome to make clay sculptures. Workshops take place at 6 and 8pm.
- Spike Sligo has the wonderfully tilted ‘Can I wear Sandals to a Funeral’. All of life’s big questions will be asked, and hopefully answered! And as its being held in the Heart’s Desire Barista Bar, you can have an expresso with your philosophy.
- To finish off a fantastic night, back in the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Phelim Drew will present his interpretation of George Orwell’s classic ‘Down and Out in Paris & London’.
Roscommon
All over County Roscommon there will be events celebrating our cultural heritage.
- In Tulsk, there will be a recital of the epic Irish literary masterpiece ‘Cattle Raid of Cooley’. In this historical setting this will be Cattle Raiding on a Grand Scale, Recounting the Tales in the Manner Intended.
- JJ’s in the Square in Roscommon, will host a night of Arts Caberet. There will be songs, poetry, comedy, storytelling and visual arts so everyone is sure to find something that takes their fancy.
- King’s House will stay open late on culture night. So be sure to take a tour of this magnificent Georgian Mansion.
- Or why not head to Strokestown Park House for a screening of the thought-provoking Emmy award-winning documentary ‘Ireland’s Great Famine and the Irish Diaspora.
Culture Night – Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo
This is just a very small snapshot of the amazing night that lies in wait this Friday 22nd. So come on out and celebrate our national culture and heritage. This will surely be a night to remember in the West.
