Culture night in Munster – Cork, Kerry, Clare, Tipperary, Limerick, Waterford
Since it began as a small event in Dublin in 2006, Culture Night has grown into one of the most inspirational events of the year. For one night only, on Friday 21st September, cultural organisations all over the country are throwing open their doors. We have picked some of our favourite events in Munster.
Culture Night in Cork
If you have ever wondered about the creative process behind sculptures, then the National Sculpture Factory is the place to be. US artist Tamsie Ringler will be doing a performance pour, and you can marvel at her River Lee cast iron artwork. You will also be able to visit the artist studios to hear the stories behind their creations.
Also in Cork, the Glucksman’s Theatre has a jam-packed programme of events for culture night. In the afternoon from 4-6pm there will be family art workshops with Engaging the Senses. All are welcome to create tactile artworks from a range of different materials. From 7pm the Buena Comida Social Club will be hosting an evening of tapas, drinks and live music. And to finish off the night, Tours by Torchlight will give a unique and magical tour of the current exhibition ‘Josef and Anni Albers: Voyage inside a Blind Experience’. Advance booking is essential.
And for those who want to see the Banks of the Lovely Lee from a different angle, why not take a free cultural boat tour on board the ‘Cailin Oir’. The Port of Cork Tour will depart from Custom House Quay at 4pm. Or head to Youghal for a chance to see the classic movie Moby Dick in the place where it was originally filmed.
In Clonakilty the Footsbarn Travelling Theatre will bring the streets of this west Cork town alive with their theatrical parade from 5.30pm.Then at Asna Square there will be traditional music, song and set dancing for everyone to enjoy and join in. And even further South on Bere Island, there will be an evening of art and culture with local artists, islanders and photographers.
Culture Night in Limerick
In Limerick there is a unique opportunity to go Behind the Scenes in Henry Street Garda Station. If you have always wanted to see how a busy city centre Garda Station functions – now is your chance. From the communications room to the custody suite, this tour is not to be missed.
The worlds of history and horses combine at King John’s Castle, Limerick for European Warriors of Horseback Archery. See incredible demonstrations of historical horseback archery at 5pm and 7pm.
While if you would like to see a different side of Limerick, why not take to the river. Nevsail Watersports are offering taster sessions. Beginners and advanced alike are welcome to try kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, boating and sailing.
Culture Night in Clare
In Clare there is also a wealth of events taking place. In Ennistymon’s Foust Gallery, Music in the Gallery – The Big Sing will be treating patrons to a night of music and entertainment. The kids are catered for from 6 with adults being treated up to 10pm. In Miltown Malbay there will be Storytelling with Roisin Meaney. This acclaimed children’s author will be entertaining 3-6 year olds and 6-10 year olds separately. They are guaranteed to go home with heads full of magical dreams. Meanwhile in Glor, Ennis they are celebrating Poets, Ancient and Modern. Some of Clare’s most famous poets will be reading from and talking about their works at this special event.
Culture Night In Kerry
In the Killarney Plaza Hotel, writer Fiona O’Connor will be conducting the writing workshop Voices for Women. Historical records and testimonies from women will be used to create literary works. Seven Ages-The Kerry Collection is a permanent display of Pauline Bewick’s work in Killorglin. This year Pauline will give a personal tour of the collection. In addition she will take part in an ‘in conversation’ session with Frank Lewis, gallery owner and public relations specialist. The Scartalgen Hertiage Centre will have guest musicians and performers from the Sliabh Luachra area as part of the ‘Handed Down Series’
Culture Night in Tipperary
In Tipperary, Culture Night coincides with the start of the Cashel Arts Festival. Catch the renowned author for storytelling in Cashel Library. Down the road in Cahir, there will be a children’s painting class in the Craft Granary. While in Tipperary town a free screening of the Happy Prince will take place in the Tipperary Excel
Culture Night in Waterford
A backstage tour of the Theatre Royal will give you a glimpse of a working theatre while hearing about the architectural and performance history of the venue. Or head to Garter Lane Arts Centre for a multilingual reading of Waterford Native Teresa Deevy’s one-act play The King of Spain’s Daughter
