Culture Night – Go Wild in Wicklow

Since it began as a small event in Dublin in 2006, Culture Night has grown into one of the most inspirational events of the year. For one night only, on Friday 22nd September, cultural organisations all over the country are throwing open their doors. Down Wicklow way, there is a fabulous programme of events planned. Here are a selection of some of the events taking place all around the county of Wicklow on the night. Arklow

 

Bodhran Buzz
Bodhran Buzz

First stop is Arklow where local artists are working hard to provide make your night memorable. Arklow library hosts Bodhrán Buzz, two family friendly workshops where you can come along and learn this most traditional of instruments. The experienced people of Music Generation Wicklow will show you how to hold the bodhrán and stick, and how to tap out your first rhythmic beat. Suitable for all over 7, this is sure to be a popular event so book your places early.
 

Ashford

Nun’s Cross Church in Ashford will host a Musical Evening for All Ages. All the family are welcome to this concert where local musicians Mike and Marta Nielsen will combine jazz guitar and accordion in a delightful fusion. There will be lots of other performers on the night allowing you to experience traditional music at its best.
 

Blessington

Culture Night

Russborough House in nearby Blessington is one of Irelands most majestic of country houses and is always a popular destination. On culture night there will be three award winning tours where you can see the magnificent collections and the splendour inside the 18th Century mansion. And afterwards visitors can enjoy the maze, fairy trail, parklands and café. They will also be hosting two unique drama workshops on the night. ‘Social Drama’, led by Dr Carmel O’Sullivan from Trinity College Dublin, will introduce this enjoyable approach to development of personal and social skills for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Special Educational needs.
 

Greystones

In Greystones the Shoreline Leisure Centre will be marching to a different beat. Music Together shall be leading their Samba Drumming Workshop on a merry dance. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at the Brazilian drums, tambourines, bongos or congas, now is your chance. All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult … preferably of the responsible type!
Whale Theatre
Also in Greystones, if you want to roll a lot of culture into one event, the Whale Theatre presents a night of many delights. The Corde Chamber Choir will be followed by a contemporary dance showcase. And to complete the evening, the Goode School of Dance will present a classical ballet showcase. Truly something for everyone at this unique venue.
Culture night is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Anyone lucky enough to be in Wicklow on the night of 22nd September will be spoilt for choice.
