Culture Night Galway – The West's Awake
Galway has long been considered one of the cultural capitals of Ireland. So it should come as no surprise that Friday 22nd September will see Culture Night celebrated in style on the Western seaboard. Both city and county will be in full flight with 87 events taking place across 39 towns and villages. We have selected a few of our favourites below to give you a small flavour of what’s on. We have hundreds of events listed on www.inspireme.ie. Or for the full programme of events check out www.culturenight.ie.
Athenry
Athenry comes alive from 5pm – 10pm. You can wander the medieval streets and discover fairies in the library, enjoy the music of a string quartet, drummers in market square or music in the heritage centre. There is something for everyone within these historical walls.
Ballinasloe
In Ballinasloe the library will host Majesty in the Minute, an exhibition of art, ceramics, photography, sculpture and more.
Cappataggle
Culture ‘Cappy Style’ from 7.30 till late will present an evening of music, song, dance and stories by performers of all ages, for audiences of every age in Cappataggle Community Centre.
Claregalway
The fabulous Claregalway Castle features Faerie Dances, a magical evening in a medieval setting. Join the wonderful young dancers of Youth Ballet West – you may find some fairies and pixies in their midst.
Gort
While in Gort, the Harvest Studios will be hosting a night of entertainment, fun and laughter for the whole community including puppets, music and crafts.
Galway City
Meanwhile in Galway City, your biggest problem will be trying to plan your evening to cram in as many events as possible. In the Claddagh under the watchful eye of the Spanish Arch the Claddagh Boatmen will be showing the finest examples of their majestic boats. With music and dancing on the quay, this is the chance to realise exactly why the Galway Hookers are such an important part of our heritage.
The Blue Teapot will have two lovely musical events. First up is a short pop-up concert by the Con Tempo Quartet. Followed by a quiet singing workshop with Kate Duignan. Everyone’s favourite bookstore Charlie Byrne’s hosts the now traditional Culture Night literary gathering with readings from every Galway author who has published a book in the past year. There will be live interviews, recitals and sessions, a screening of the documentary ‘Five Swords at the Crossroads’ And also an exhibition of new work by Spanish artist Sabina Niguez. If you want to see the skills of yesteryear, Cumman na bhFear will be hosting a blacksmith demonstration in their workshop.
For a bit of Gallic flair, Le Petit Pois will be screening Babette’s Feast. This is a film that tells a tale of French cuisine. There will be a small introduction at 4pm. This is followed by a wine, cheese and chat before a screening of this classic and much loved film.
