Culture Night in Dublin

Since it began as a small event in Dublin in 2006, Culture Night has grown into one of the most inspirational events of the year. For one night only, on Friday 21st September, cultural organisations all over the country are throwing open their doors. We have picked some of our favourite events in the capital city. 

Culture Night in Dublin – Something for Everyone

 

If you have ever promised yourself as you pass by on the Luas that someday you will hop off and explore Collins Barracks, tonight is your chance. The national museum of Decorative Arts & History always has fantastic displays and exhibitions. And on culture night, from 3-6 pm artist-in-residence and internally acclaimed glass artist Róisín de Buitléar will be on-hand to explain about her work.
 
Have you ever wondered how to find out about your family tree? Then the National Archives is the place to be. The doors will be open and you can see displays of samples of historical documents. Take a tour of the genealogy advisory service and the spectacular Reading Room, or explore the vast collection in the archives.
 
Or if you have always wanted to see the inside of City Hall and it’s famous Council Chambers then pop over to Dame Street. There will be plenty of entertainment as you take time to explore this historical building, with access to the Rotunda Room from 6pm.  
 

Back Stage in Smock Alley

Theatrical types should head to Smock Alley where you can explore the world of the theatre in 17th Century Dublin. Your talented guides shall make this historical building come to life. And also introduce you to the work of the theatre today.
 
Or what about a pop-up contemporary opera, also in Temple Bar? Historic Fishamble Street will come alive to the sounds of the new Nick Roth opera ‘Xenia’ which explores the concept of hospitality.
 
In Marlay Park you are welcome to come and explore the recently restored Marlay Craft Courtyard Project. Meet the artists and craftspeople who have made this fantastic facility their base. With artists, jewellers, textile designers and many more – you are sure to be inspired.
 
Or in north County Dublin why not head to Ardgillan Castle in Balbriggan. Cultures combine with a celebration of Irish and Polish music in the magnificent drawing room from 4pm.
 

Take off for Culture Night

 

Anyone who has been through Dublin Airport recently will be amazed at the new developments. On Culture Night however it transforms to an artistic space. Here you can see some of the art installations. With talks on the history of the airport and its future vision, and musical entertainment this is definitely one to put on the list.
 
Glasnevin Cemetery Museum will have free access to the museum and exclusive tours of the crypt of Daniel O’Connell. There will also be a free genealogy workshop to help you delve into your family history. Places are strictly limited so booking is essential.
There will be unique access to the James Joyce Centre, with a talk and walking tour to introduce you to this literary genius and his works. Or marvel at the interactive medical exhibits in the Mater Hospital. Climb the steps to the original front entrance and learn about the past, present and future of medicine and surgery. This is sure to fascinate adults and children alike.
