Cork Comedy Festival – Laughs by the Lee
The Cork Comedy Festival is celebrating it’s second birthday from 21st to 24th September. As with all two-years olds we can expect plenty of back-chat and pushing of boundaries, some spillages but most of all lots of fun.
Thursday Night
Thursday night is the first of the CoCo Comedy Club Special Festival Series. Each night a different headliner takes to the stage at The Roundy Bar along with some emerging local talent. First up is Tipp man Tom O’Mahony for what promises to be a cracking start to the festival.
Friday Night
Friday night happens to be Culture Night all over the country. And what could be more cultured than a night at the opera house with Cornelius O’Sullivan?? This gig is free, but places are limited so move fast to grab those tickets.
Staying at the Opera House don’t miss the festival Opening Gala, where Colin Murphy is tasked with ushering the cream on Irish comedy to the stage including Alison Spittle, Gearoid Farrelly, Bernard O’Shea and Neil Delamere.
Or hot foot it across the river to The Everyman where you can catch Chris Kent, Andrea Farrell, Joanne McNally, Deirdre O’Kane and PJ Gallagher in action.
Saturday
Saturday starts on a spiritual high note. Kevin McAleer will be in The Crane Lane Theatre imparting his wisdom for the ages. This is better than any self-help manual available – laughter truly is the best medicine. And any comedy gig that suggests you wear loose clothing is going to be good…
Between The Everyman and The Cork Opera House, Ireland’s best comedians will be vying for laughs all night long. Your biggest challenge will be deciding where to base yourself. Or there is always Telly takes on the Internet at the The Poor Relation Grocery And Pub, when Colin Murphy lines out with comedian/vlogger upstarts, Davey Reilly (Facts) and Emma Doran.
Sunday
By Sunday, parents may be feeling guilty about ignoring their offspring for the weekend in the pursuit of laughs. Fear not! You can atone for the neglect by bringing any 6-10 year olds to Monster LOLs Feat. Bec Hill & Tiernan Douieb. This comedy hour will have smallies in stitches. Alternatively take them along to see Lords Of Strut: Absolute Legends. Suitable for over 6’s and sure to be a hit with a young audience, the Lords of Strut will deliver their most ridiculous and sublime family show to date.
Collect your parent of the year medal, drop them back to the babysitter and now let’s see out the festival in style…
Barry Murphy (he of Aprés Match fame!) will be joined by improv archmaster, Ian Coppinger, sparkling newcomer Alison Spittle and comedy heavyweight Neil Delamere at The Everyman at 7 O’Clock.
Last but not least, The Cork Opera House at 8 O’Clock will feature Andrew Stanley of RTE’s I Dare Ya fame. The rest of the stellar line up includes Corkonian Chris Kent; cult Aussie delight Bec Hill; improv archmaester Ian Coppinger; and the singular Kevin McAleer a.k.a Tyrone’s leading Zen Buddhist saint. The phrase ‘spoilt for choice’ does not do this festival justice.
Of course this being Cork, your taxi man home will probably also be a comedian….
