Clonmel Applefest 2018
The lovely town of Clonmel in South Tipperary is often associated with cider and honey. It’s Irish name is ‘Cluain Meala’ – meaning ‘the meadow of honey’. And as any cider lover will know, Ireland’s beloved Bulmers is produced in the town. So it’s no surprise that both the apple and bee are the stars of a brand new festival, Clonmel Applefest.
The festival takes place from the 28th – 30th September. Heritage enthusiasts, families and visitors will find plenty to do over the course of the weekend. Here’s some of our highlights…
Apples, Milk & Honey – The Land Of Plenty
Start the weekend in the South Tipperary Arts Centre on Friday night. At 6pm a wonderful exhibition will celebrate the fertile land of the area. Reading of organic writing by local writers on themes of Apple, Birds, Bees, Honey and History takes place afterwards. The atmosphere is sure to be buzzing! Find out more here.
Apple & Heritage Fair
On Saturday, a lovely free event all about apples takes place from 11am -5pm. Learn about cider-pressing and how to grow your own orchard. For little ones, Pooh’s Corner will have plenty of activities to keep them entertained. There will be lots of food to try and buy. And some fantastic local bands will provide the soundtrack to what should be a delightful day. Find out more here
Heritage Food, Cider & Wine Musical Soiree
Later on Saturday evening, Clonmel’s historic Town Hall will be the venue for a cider, wine and food musical soiree featuring the world premiere of ‘Lady Blessington’s Bath’. Lots of fun, delicious food and a few drinks should make for a most enjoyable evening. Find out more here.
Vale Of Honey Community Day
On Sunday the honey bee will be the centre of attention. The Quay’s will be a hive (excuse the pun) of activity all day long. Maybe you fancy trying some Salsa dancing. Or perhaps you might enjoy a ‘Pollinator Walk’ to discover which plants bees like best. There is something in store for everyone. Find out more here.
Clonmel 40th Honey Show
Last but not least, the 40th edition of the Clonmel Honey Show is a sweet way to finish off the festival. The show exhibits honey, beeswax candles and bee products. There will be demonstrations on using honey in the kitchen, candle making and much more besides. Find out more here.
