Child-Friendly Culture Night
Child-friendly Culture night in the Capital
Culture Night has grown from small beginnings to become one of the most important fixtures in the cultural calendar in Ireland. And having started out in Dublin, it is no surprise that the most extensive catalogue of events will be held in the capital. While there are events for all ages this is definitely a night to involve the children. The atmosphere is electric, as you show them the city as the sun goes down. We have selected a few of our favourite child-friendly events all over Dublin City below to give you a small flavour of what’s on. We also have hundreds of events listed on www.inspireme.ie or for the full programme of events check out www.culturenight.ie.
Smithfield
First up is the Light House Cinema in Smithfield, which will have animation workshops in association with Cartoon Saloon, and a special family friendly Cinema Book Club screening of the Roald Dahl classic ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’. And just outside in Smithfield Square the Interactive Playground returns with an even bigger programme for all ages to enjoy. The square will be divided into 8 separate zones – each one a treasure to be discovered. Face-painting, fencing, drumming, crafts, and circus workshops are just some of the delights on offer at this amazing event.
Chester Beatty Library
Across the river, the ever-enchanting Chester Beatty Library will have family friendly story-telling inspired by the Library Persian Collection at 6.15. There will also be guided tours of the library treasures and family packs to keep them entertained as you go. And remember the fabulous Silk Road Café will be open to try some tempting treats on the way out.
Francis St
In the fabulous Gallery Zozimus on Francis Street, Artists Mary Conroy and Kate O’Reilly present a family-friendly workshop. They will use 2D flat-pattern paper nets to construct geometric 3D shapes. You can use these to create decorated paper forms to take home and enjoy. There will also be Play with Clay for all the family, where little hands can get stuck in.
Exchequer St
If you have a little one who dreams of Tinkerbell or Batman, then the Aerial Cirque on Exchequer St is the only event for you. There will be two 50 minute child + parent cocoon classes, followed by demonstrations of students flying through the air. This is one experience they will remember forever.
Parnell Square
For the budding poets, the good people at Poetry Ireland are opening the doors of their new home on Parnell Square There will be poetry tours by ‘Maud Gonne’. And children can have a go at constructing gigantic ‘cut-up’ poems from 4-6 pm.
Dawson St
And if they want to meet their heroes, why not head to Hodges Figgis on Dawson Street where the famous children’s authors Lucy Cousins (of Maisy Mouse fame) and Rob Biddulph (Kevin) will be creating art in the window. Experts will also be on hand to advise on the next literary adventure.
