Bookworms rejoice! To mark Ireland’s new national day to celebrate reading, most of our events this week have a bookish theme. Here’s our pick of what’s on…..

FESTIVAL: Between the Red Lines

Between the Red Lines, a spin-off series of events from the Red Line Book Festival, will take place over seven days to coincide with the Ireland Reads campaign (see below). Festival voices this year include: acclaimed novelist, Marita Conlon McKenna, previous Red Line Book Festival Writer-in-Residence and award-winning writer Lisa Harding, journalist and writer, Manchán Mangan, Patricia Forde, Annemarie Ni Churreáin and John Patrick McHugh among others.

LITERATURE: Ireland Reads: The Great Escape!

This Thursday, Libraries Ireland are inviting people of all ages to get reading. There are some lovely free online events planned to mark the occasion. At 7pm they will present a discussion focusing on reading during lockdown and how books have helped us escape, chaired by Rick O’Shea. Guests will include Prof Luke O’Neill and Sebastian Barry, Laureate for Irish Fiction.

ART: High Heart : In the making—New modes of exhibition with Alice Butler (aemi)and Maeve Connolly (IADT) 

Devised by IADT students, two online gatherings will take place to accompany their online exhibtion High Heart. The second of these takes place on Friday and welcomes Alice Butler (aemi) and Maeve Connolly (IADT) who will explore how artists, curators and programmers have adapted to new modes of exhibition.

FESTIVAL: Limerick Literary Festival 2021

The Limerick Literary Festival celebrates the life and works of the author Kate O’Brien. Each year the festival attracts prominent participants from all over the world. 2021 see’s the festival return in a digital format to allow book lovers continued access to their programme of events. It will focus on the Irish Writer at Home and Abroad where some of the best names in Irish literature invite you to join them from their home to yours.

LITERATURE: Fiction at the Friary

Fiction at the Friary is a free monthy fiction event held in Cork City since January 2017. Co-hosted by Madeleine D’Arcy and Danielle McLaughin. Pre-Covid, the event was held on the final Sunday of each month in The Friary Bar, Cork City. However, since March 2020 they have moved online. The guest author this Sunday is Cork native Laura McKenna, who’s debut novel Words To Shape My Name is garnering rave reviews.
