5 Things to Do This Week

30 November to 6 December – Our top 5 things to do this week

It’s officially the festive season. And with the easing of restrictions and the switching on of Christmas lights around the country, there is a buzz of excitement in the air. Here’s our pick of what’s happening…

FESTIVAL: Waterford Winterval

With Waterford’s win over Kilkenny in the hurling semifinal, and the wonderful Winterval festival due to start on Friday, those in The Déise have plenty to smile about this week. You can take in the sights from the Waterford Eye. Or maybe explore the Nutcraker Trail with the family? Lots of fun and plenty of hurling talk in the city this month….

Set within the magical Abbey Grounds in Wicklow town, the Wicklow Christmas Market has been reimagined for 2020. This will be a Christmas day out the family won’t forget which includes the alpaca experience, a magical funfair and fire shows. There will be plenty of opportunities to pick up some treats at the craft stalls. And a chance to indulge with delicious artisan foods.

MUSIC: Handel’s ‘Messiah

Is there anything more uplifting than Handel’s ‘Messiah’? First premièred in Dublin in 1742, the piece endures huge popularity to this day and tells the universal story of triumph over trial. This performance, livestreamed on Thursday from the National Concert Hall, given by Ireland’s flagship baroque orchestra and chamber choir directed by Irish conductor Peter Whelan, uses period instruments to capture the sound world of the original Dublin performance. It will transport you back to that first performance now nearly 300 years ago.

And of course Bishop Lucey Park is decked out for festive season, with magical lights. Lots of Christmas cheer by the banks of the Lee.
